Cary Academy Summer Quest – Photography Camp for Kids and Teens

When I was a kid I spent a lot of time at YMCA camp – and loved it.   Running around outside, playing dodge ball and cross the ocean, and swimming in the big Y pool.  For 8 weeks of summer there seemed to be an invisible line between the “fun” of summer  camp and the learning of the school year.  But what if those amazing summer experiences broke down the walls of the classroom and brought learning AND adventure in to the same space?  Cary Academy Summer Quest has masterfully combined traditional summer recreational fun with one-of-a-kind learning experiences.  Across campus on any given week students are programing lego robots, setting up tents and setting up campfires for outdoor survival camp, and stirring up culinary masterpieces in the kitchen at cooking camps.  In my camp, budding photojournalists and photographers are laughing and field-tripping their way through a crash course in photography.

The only thing I love more than being a photographer is teaching kids and teens to find their own photographic talents.  So many campers are like I was, creative and artistic but frustrated with the inability to make the masterpieces in their heads with just pen and paper.  With the right tool (a camera) and a week of energetic instruction many pre-teens and teens blossom in to budding photojournalists and fine art photographers.  Learning takes place at my favorite photo locations around The Triangle. Learning about shutter speed while taking rides on a carrousel.  Learning macro photography among the bright colors of fruits and vegetables at The Farmer’s Market.  Learning about perspective while going indoor rock climbing.  Even taking abstract photos in some pretty funky architecture.
